43-year-old male survivor in suicide pact with parents sentenced to 5 and 1/2 years in prison


27th September 2022 – (Hong Kong) A man and wife aged 73 and 66 respectively who were suspected of having financial problems due to repayment of debts for their 43-year-old son decided to enter into a suicide pact with their son on Lunar New Year eve (10th February 2021) last year. However, after the couple jumped off the roof of the building where they lived, the son gave up suicidal thoughts and he was finally rescued and arrested by police officers.

The man who earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of suicide pact confirmed his guilty plea in the High Court today (27th) and was sentenced to five and a half years in prison.

The judge stated that the defendant had always been aware of his parents’ decision to commit suicide but he never tried to stop them. Besides, the defendant’s plea letter did not mention his grief and grief for the loss of his parents, except that he hoped for a lighter sentence. The judge pointed out that he was chilled by his reaction, but indicated that it would not be regarded as an additional factor in sentencing. Born in Guangzhou, the defendant Lau (43), who was a company driver at the time of the incident, has no previous criminal record.
