4 male patients in a Palliative Care ward at Shatin Hospital test positive for Parainfluenza Virus Type 3

22nd March 2023 – (Hong Kong) Four male patients (aged 63 to 78) in a Palliative Care ward at Shatin Hospital presented with respiratory symptoms since 8th March. The hospital arranged appropriate testing for the patients, the results were all positive to Parainfluenza Virus Type 3. One patient passed away earlier due to his underlying disease. Among the remaining three patients, one patient is in serious condition due to his underlying disease and the other two patients are being treated under isolation with stable condition.

The ward concerned has adopted the following enhanced infection control measures according to established guidelines:

  1. Enhanced hand hygiene; and
  2. Enhanced disinfection and cleaning of the ward concerned.

The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation of the ward. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
