330 ATMs damaged by radical protesters in the past few days, affected bank branches to resume service soonest possible


6th October 2019 – (Hong Kong) Many bank branches and ATMs have become the targets of vandalism in the past few days. Spokesperson for Monetary Authority expressed that as of yesterday, at least 10% of the total 3,300 ATMs in Hong Kong were damaged. Also, many ATMs inside MTR stations and malls were out of service to customers.

There were a total of 5% operational ATMs which were short of cash. Banks are currently working closely with cash transportation service providers to make sure that there is no shortage of cash in the ATMs. The spokesperson further stated that they hope all affected branches will restore their services as soon as possible to minimise inconvenience to the public.
