25th November 2022- (Hong Kong) On 29th September, 2019, a large number of demonstrators gathered outside the Government Headquarters in Admiralty. Some rioters blocked the road, set fire, and threw petrol bombs at the government building. The police had to dispatch water cannon vehicles to disperse the crowd. Eight men and women who were arrested that day were both charged with rioting afterwards. Five pleaded guilty before trial, one pleaded guilty during the trial, and the remaining two men were convicted after trial. One of the female defendants, 32-year-old woman Lau involved in the case was sentenced to 3 years and 5 months in the District Court today (25th), while the remaining 7 defendants in the same case were sentenced to 40 to 55 months in prison and training centre order. When sentencing, the judge pointed out that the female defendant had a good background but she made a mistake, and the chance of repeating the crime was extremely low, so the sentence reduced her sentence as appropriate. She was quarantined earlier and the sentencing was deferred till today.
