30-year-old Pakistani man sentenced to life imprisonment for killing 7-11 employee in Yuen Long

6th February 2023 – (Hong Kong) A 30-year-old Pakistani man, Islam Javed Iqbal who is a Hong Kong resident escaped after stealing beer from a 7-11 convenience store in Yuen Long three years ago on 30th December 2019. The 61-year-old employee, Tang Chung-keung pursued him but was pushed to the ground. Tang was later certified dead 2 days later. The suspect who was arrested subsequently denied murder charge. After 4 weeks of trial in the Court of First Instance of the High Court, the defendant was unanimously found guilty of murder on 2nd February by the jury.

Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court, Joseph Yau sentenced him to life imprisonment in accordance with the law today. As for the theft that the defendant had admitted before the trial, the judge said that he had no criminal record of theft before this case. A fine is usually imposed for shop theft offence. However, since the defendant has already been sentenced to life imprisonment, it is meaningless to impose a fine. He was sentenced to unconditional release on this charge.
