29-year-old Filipino woman duped into online recruitment scam and loses HK$13,000


28th June 2022 – (Hong Kong) At 9.45am this Sunday (26th), the police received a report from a 29-year-old Filipino woman who responded to a recruitment message sent by a stranger earlier to work as a shopper by pretending to purchase items online to promote merchants and earn commissions.

The victim then deposited about HK$13,000 into the 4 accounts designated by the other party for shopping on the platform. Afterwards, the scammers continued to ask the victim for money. The victim suspected of being deceived and called the police for help. After a preliminary investigation, the case was classified as “obtaining property by deception” and was handed over to the Sham Shui Po District Criminal Investigation Team for follow-up. No arrests have been made so far. Police said some scammers will even give out commissions after the victim’s initial deposit to gain the victim’s trust. The police appeal to the public to call “18222” if in doubt.
