22nd May 2019 – (Hong Kong) A 28 year old man named Chan rented a house from an owner at the haunted Bela Vista Villa Miami Resort in Cheung Chau. He told the owner that he wanted to ‘celebrate birthday for his girlfriend’. He took the keys from the owner at 6pm yesterday and went alone into the unit.

After two hours later, the owner found out that his ‘girlfriend’ did not turn up at the house, he decided to call the man to enquire. The man didn’t pick up the call and the owner immediately used his spare key to open the door. He was shocked to stumble upon the man lying unconscious in the bathroom with a pot of burned charcoal next to him.

Ambulance rushed to the scene and sent him to Cheung Chau Hospital before being airlifted via helicopter to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. Police are currently investigating the cause of suicide.

Bela Vista Villa is a cluster of vacation bungalows situated in central Cheung Chau. Though it is close to the beautiful Tung Wan Beach and should be a popular location for vacation, Bela Vista Villa has been named ‘The Resort of Charcoal Suicide’.

It all started in June 1989 when a woman with marital problems first killed her son in a unit, then suited herself in an all-red outfit and hanged herself at Bela Vista Villa. After the incident, residents on the island reported sightings of the mother and son wandering around and there were even suspected cases of possession.

According to unofficial statistics, there had been over 20 cases of suicides at the vacation resort.
