11th March 2023 – (Beijing) A viral video circulating online shows a 28-year-old woman in China kneeling and crying in a shoe store, begging her parents to buy her a pair of shoes priced at 200 yuan (approximately HK$230). Her parents refused, claiming that cheaper shoes were sufficient. The emotional outburst has caused some internet users to label the woman as an “entitled child” or “freeloader.” However, according to the shop staff, the woman and her parents are migrant workers who work together and share their earnings. The woman’s monthly salary is deposited into her parents’ account, and the family had gone out to buy shoes together before the incident occurred.
