15th September 2021 – (Hong Kong) A 25-year-old site supervisor was charged with participating in an illegal assembly in Causeway Bay on 29th September 2019. He denied the charge and accused the police of arresting the wrong person. After the case was tried in the District Court, the judge convicted him today (15th). The judge said that there were a lot of rioters during the illegal assembly on that day and there were demonstrators sabotaging CCTV footage.
The defendant continued to struggle after being arrested, increasing the risk of violent conflict. The court must consider deterrence and punishment when sentencing, and finally sentenced the defendant to 6 months in prison.
The prosecution said that at about 7pm that day, more than 100 demonstrators gathered around Leighton Road and Wong Nai Chung Road in Causeway Bay. They blocked the road and confronted the police. The defendant ran away after seeing the police, but was soon overpowered by the police. The police seized the defendant’s rucksack and found that it contained a mask, gloves and other items.
