2 hiking accidents occur on Lantau Island this afternoon within the span of 1 hour, one death and one injury reported

24th January 2023 – (Hong Kong) A middle-aged woman and five friends went hiking on Sze Tsz Tau Shan on Ngong Ping Road, Lantau Island today. At about 3pm today, the woman accidentally fell into a 20m deep cliff. Her friends immediately reported to the police for help. Rescuers arrived after receiving the report. Due to the remoteness of the site, the Government Flying Service was deployed to the scene.

After 4 hours of rescue, the victim was hoisted up at 7pm and sent to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital  for emergency treatment.

She was subsequently certified dead.

Meanwhile, at around 4pm today, a woman in her 40s was walking with her two male friends on a Wong Lung Hang Country Trail, Lantau Island. During this period, she accidentally slipped and fractured her foot. The Government Flying Service helicopter was called to the scene and sent the injured to the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital.
