18th February 2024 – (Delhi) Indian actress Suhani Bhatnagar, who gained fame for her portrayal of young Babita Phogat in the popular wrestling drama ‘Dangal’, tragically passed away in Delhi yesterday. The 19-year-old actress had been battling Dermatomyositis, a rare inflammatory disease that is characterized by skin rash and muscle weakness.

Suhani was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on 7th February, but unfortunately, her condition worsened, and she succumbed to medical complications on 16th February.

According to her family, Suhani began experiencing symptoms of the disease around two months ago, but it took ten days for doctors to diagnose her with Dermatomyositis. Her mother, Puja Bhatnagar, explained, “She developed a red spot on her hands about two months ago. We consulted with doctors in different hospitals, but it couldn’t be diagnosed.”

Her deteriorating health led to her admission to AIIMS, where her condition continued to deteriorate. Suhani’s father, Sumit Bhatnagar, revealed that her lungs were severely affected by an infection and an accumulation of excess fluid. Despite being placed on a ventilator, her condition did not improve.

Sumit Bhatnagar also mentioned the rarity of the disease, claiming that there are only five to six known cases worldwide.

Dermatomyositis is an uncommon inflammatory disease that primarily affects the muscles and is characterized by muscle weakness and a distinct skin rash. It can also impact other organ systems, such as the lungs, heart, and digestive system.

Suhani Bhatnagar, a resident of Faridabad, was cremated at the Ajronda cremation ground.

In the critically acclaimed 2016 biographical drama ‘Dangal’, Suhani portrayed the role of young Babita Phogat, while Aamir Khan played the role of their father, Mahavir Phogat. The film followed the inspiring journey of a wrestler who trains his daughters to become successful athletes. The older versions of the characters were played by Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra, with Zaira Wasim portraying young Geeta.

Aamir Khan’s production house expressed their condolences, stating, “We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our dear Suhani. Our heartfelt condolences to her mother Poojaji and the entire family. She was an incredibly talented young girl and a valuable member of our team. ‘Dangal’ would have been incomplete without Suhani.”
