182 pedestrians involved in traffic accidents in East Kowloon in 2019, resulting in 16 deaths, including 7 elderly people

16th September 2020 – (Hong Kong) According to statistics, a total of 182 pedestrians were involved in traffic accidents in East Kowloon in 2019, resulting in 16 deaths, including 7 elderly people.

Between January and August this year, 90 pedestrians were involved in traffic accidents, resulting in 18 deaths, of which 10 were elderly. In view of this, the Road Safety Section of the Transport Department of the East Kowloon Region, together with officers from the Police-Civil Relations Section of each police district, issued road safety messages at many black spots where pedestrians illegally crossed the road and public housing estates in the district.

The staff also carried out special publicity and education to the elders, reminding them to abide by the traffic rules, to use the crossing facilities properly, to follow the instructions of the traffic lights, and to pay attention to the traffic conditions when crossing the road to avoid accidents.
