18 arrested in 2 illegal mahjong parlours in Tsuen Wan


25th May 2022 – (Hong Kong) According to information and after in-depth investigation, officers from the Special Duty Team of the Tsuen Wan Police District raided a tenement building on Ho Pui Street at about 3pm today (25th). Officers smashed two suspected illegal mahjong gambling parlours and arrested 18 people in the operation.

During the operation, officers first arrested a 67-year-old woman surnamed Chan at a suspected illegal mahjong gambling parlour on suspicion of “operating a gambling establishment”. In addition, four women and five men, aged between 49 and 73, were suspected of “gambling in a gambling establishment” and they were arrested. One of them, a 62-year-old woman surnamed Chan, who failed to cooperate and attempted to escape, was also arrested on suspicion of “obstructing police officers in the performance of their duties”.

Officers later smashed another suspected illegal mahjong gambling den in the tenement building, and arrested a 64-year-old man surnamed Lam on suspicion of “operating a gambling establishment”.

The other two women and five men, aged between 63 and 79, were arrested on suspicion of “gambling in a gambling establishment”. All the arrested persons were also suspected of contravening the Prevention and Control of Disease (Prohibition on Gathering) Regulation (Cap. 599G) and fixed penalty notices were issued to them. All arrested persons are being detained for investigation. During the operation, officers seized a total of 6 mahjong tables, 12 sets of mahjong, a small amount of cash and a batch of gambling  paraphernalia.
