1,400 out of 2,000 total traffic light systems damaged by rioters during protests


16th January 2020 – (Hong Kong) Alfred Sit, Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services expressed today that a total of 1,400 out of 2,000 traffic light systems were damaged by rioters in the past few months. Since then, Electrical and Mechanical Services Department has increased the workforce from 80 to 160 staff to complete the repair works. At least 80% of the traffic light systems were repaired within 24 hours and 16% repaired within two days.

Traffic lights on Nathan Road and Argyle Street were damaged for over 17 times. The Department is currently studying methods to reinforce the traffic light systems. Protective covers have been installed at the traffic light control boards.
