13th February 2020 – (Hong Kong) The Centre for Health Protection announced today that the winter flu season has ended. During this period, 113 adults died of influenza and no deaths from children were recorded. The Centre reminds the public that although the winter flu peak period has ended, citizens should continue to maintain personal and environmental hygiene to prevent respiratory diseases.
Hong Kong entered the winter flu season at the beginning of last month. The level of influenza activity peaked at the end of last month and has continued to decline since then. It returned to baseline levels early this month. The Center for Health Protection claims that the flu season lasted for about 5 weeks. The main epidemic virus is influenza A (H1), accounting for about 80%, followed by influenza A (H3) and small amounts of influenza B. During this peak period, 182 severe cases of influenza-related adult patients requiring intensive care were recorded, of which 113 died. As for severe cases of children, there were no deaths, and 5 of them did not receive seasonal influenza vaccine this season.
