1,000 persons in custody and 800 correctional officers infected so far, family and official visits suspended till 20th March

3rd March 2022 – (Hong Kong) It is understood that as of yesterday (2nd), the Correctional Services Department has detected a total of about 1,000 infected persons in custody and 800 infected correctional officers including Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre, Stanley Prison, Lo Wu Correctional Institution and Pik Uk Correctional Institution.

The department will suspend all visits, including family visits and official visits, in the next two weeks (7th to 20th March), and deploy all visiting room resources to support the detention of frontline personnel in the institute. The department emphasised that the infected inmates and close contact groups have been immediately isolated and treated. Cape Collinson Correctional Institution and Sha Tsui Correctional Institution have been converted into isolation centres to enhance the capacity of isolation facilities.

The department will continue to carry out virus testing for inmates to reduce the flow of people and contacts in prisons, and isolate infected persons. In terms of staff, as of yesterday, around 1,000 correctional staff were infected with COVID-19, and close contacts were required to work from home (including those affected by confirmed cases in family members) which seriously affected the daily operations of various correctional institutions.

In the past few weeks, the Department has taken a number of emergency measures to mobilise all available human resources for frontline work, including the Staff Training Institute, Rehabilitation Services Unit, headquarters staff, etc.
