1 of 12 people who attempted to abscond to Taiwan by boat last year sentenced to 20 months in prison for making explosives


12th May 2022 – (Hong Kong) 12 Hong Kong people were arrested by the mainland coast guard on their way to Taiwan by boat in August last year. 10 of them have been handed over to Hong Kong from the mainland, and 9 of them were charged with obstructing justice. One of them, 31-year-old Wong Wai-yin, a renovation worker who was also involved in an explosives case, pleaded guilty to one count of making explosives in the District Court today (12th), and the other charge of obstruction of justice was allowed to be put on stay.

The judge pointed out that making explosives is a very serious crime, and the incident occurred during a social incident. Although the defendant had served prison time in the Mainland, the defendant was still sentenced to 20 months in prison.
